It was the author quoting a german eyewitness source. An officer of the unit that had been in combat with the Americans up to then.Sid Guttridge wrote:Hi Felix C.,
You post, "The book I read titled The Lost Battalion made reference to the storm troops how they were veteran, younger, larger physically than the Germans opposing the battalion etc.."
Was that a first hand observation by those witnesses present, or the author giving an explanation to the reader of what the Stosstruppen were?
Cheers,
Sid.
Did the USA face any of the better German units in WW1?

Would it be possible to cite the actual source? It seems to me that it's based on the "official" criteria rather than the reality of the situation that late in the war. I haven't found a casualty list for Sturmbataillon Nr. 2, but in one for Nr. 5 (Rohr) for fighting that took place in the last months there were a number of men born in 1899, which suggests inexperience.

It will take me a bit to get to it. I am on to the Joachim Ringelnatz book.

That would be "Als Mariner im Krieg" right? There exists a very nice audio book produced by German public radio of it. Are you interested in that?Felix C wrote:It will take me a bit to get to it. I am on to the Joachim Ringelnatz book.

As a side note - The American Army was thrown into combat due to circumstances before General Pershing actually intended. GHQ, AEF planned for the American soldier to be ready for major combat early in 1919, and to become the main force against the Germans by the end of the year. Victory was projected for 1920. MHJ

Attrition; I was skimming it using the on-line viewer and I couldn't find any maps or tables in my admittedly cursory overview. Could you point me to the section or pages where some of the maps are? I may have been looking in the wrong volumes. Thanks!Attrition wrote:http://digi.landesbibliothek.at/viewer/ ... 1858814/1/James A Pratt III wrote:If you can find the 1918 volumes of Der Weltkrieg they will have maps and text on which german Divisions fought the US Army during WW I.

They're at the back of the books as far as I remember. If you want the southern eastern front, http://www.comroestudios.com/StanHanna/ has them in separate files.
PS In the contents section (having pressed "full text" to get away from the fraktur typeface) at the bottom are karte, which are the maps. (looking at the 1917 part 1 volume anyway) hope this helps.

Thanks Attrition. One of the maps helped me to better pin-point the unit that my Grandfather was serving with. Very helpful tip. Thanks!
