A Serbian Nationalist started the First World War by assasinating Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria.

A Serbian Nationalist started the First World War by assasinating Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria.
That only sparked the inventible Austrian Invasion of Serbia, which by the way was defeated three times.
The assassination in no way started the World War that is far too simplistic and is only propagated by people who have no knowledge of the world situation at the time.

The Serbian Army was commanded by arguably the best general of World War 1.

Field Marshall Radomir Putnik,
He masterminded Serbia's defeat of the Austrian invasions of August and September, 1914 and in December of that year drove the Austrian army completely out of Serbia.

The Balkan Front was quiet until November, 1915 when von Mackenson led a combined force of Germans, Austrians and Bulgarians in a final invasion of Serbia. Short on ammunition and other supplies, Putnik and his army had to retreat under the onslaught of the three Central Powers'.

Putnik joined the retreat of the Serbian army across mountainous Albania harassed by Austrian aviation, disease and local bands, the army finally arriving Corfu in the winter of 1915-1916 one of the most amazing retreats in history.

The Serbian Army also has the honour of the very first victory of Allied forces in the First World War, The Battle of Cer Mountain

Hello to all :D; a little complement here....................................

The defense of the Sava River by the Austrian 29th Infantry Division, 6 September, 1914.

The situation on 29 August showed the bulk of the regular-army units scattered in small detachments along the river, on a front of about 20 miles; this initial disposition falls into the category of "defense at the water's edge." A new commander, Feldmarschalleutnant Alfred Krauß, who arrived at this period, ordered the immediate relief from river duty of all regular-army units and their concentration in a central locality, replacing the river detachments by several battalions of landsturm (3d class troops).

The division had barely completed its concentration, in a position of readiness, when the Serbians forced a crossing east of Mitrowitz on 6 September; their axis of advance ran straight into the Austrian billeting areas! The Austrian commander employed one infantry regiment to hold the enemy frontally, while he made a double envelopment: on the east with one brigade (less one regiment) and on the west with an entire brigade. Counter-attacked on three sides, with a wide river in back, the situation of the Serbians became desperate and finally resulted in their complete defeat that night.

It is important to note that this extraordinary success was made possible only through the prior and timely concentration of the 29th division; only five days before the Serbian crossing, this unit was widely dispersed along the river front. Surely other would has been the outcome if the Serb forces had made the river crossing with weak enemy at their front.

Any idea about the Serbian forces which had taken part in this operation? Cheers. Raúl M 8-).
