Thanks Terry.

Where and when did the first German surrender of the war occur? I am not referring to individual units, but rather the complete surrender of all units fighting in a particular area.

hi,

German colony Togo, surrender on August 27, 1914 ?

Possibly some Pacific islands even earlier, but I couldn`t identify any.

hi,

During the "hundred days", British losses were among the highest of the whole war.

Which loss did Britain suffer one week before the armistice ?

hi,

hint #1 ... it was a cultural as well as a military loss ... nearly exactly 7 days before the begin of the armistice ...

Hi Pb,

Having now thought of a question to ask I will hazard a guess that you refer to the death of Wilfred Owen on 4th Nov 1918 during the attack on the Sambre–Oise Canal position.

Hi Pb,

Thanks. I didnt want to deny anyone else the chance to have a go, and am also terrible at thinking of questions!

What unlikely fatality happened 38 years and 10 days after the spectacular start of a major battle on the Western Front? This is not a case of an old war would resulting in the death of a person, the victim had not even be born when the war ended.

hi, Terry,

from a non-native speaker, a question

a wound ?

and another (I`m sorry): Is this really a WW I question ?

Yes, sorry, the death was not from an old war wound (not sure how I managed to type 'would') but was from something left intact from the war and would certainly have been the most spectacular 'leftover' had anyone been looking!

It is a WWI question, although rather obscure maybe.

Hi,

I was going to post a hint tomorrow evening, but as you asked I will post it now.

The event did happen 38 years and ten days after the battle it could have been part of, and happened during a thunderstorm. The only victim was a cow.

Hi Pb,

Its an interesting event but not the right one. The incident in question took place on 17 June 1955 and involves a far larger type of ordinance.

hi, Terry,

I see ... my mistake was not to classify "Messines" as a "major battle" ... but I have to admit that "spectacular start" was a hint ...
