Intercepted arms shipments

Postby Spearfish on 20 Sep 2012 08:24

Can any member provide me with details of two Republic-bound arms shipments which were intercepted and unloaded at Nationalist ports.
The first was in April 1937 and was the Dutch Sarkani, which was forced to unload in Ceuta when the cruiser HrMs Java refused to escort her and the second was the Russian Kuran, intercepted by the Almirante Cervera in June 1937.
I am seeking details of the types and models of weapons carried by these two ships

Hello!

Are you sure about her name?
According to this source:

Cervera captured only ship Tsuryupa in October 1938, and in any case there is no Soviet ship with such or similar name in this list.

A small addition: the Nationalists captured 22 Czechoslovakian light bombers Aero A.101 en route to Spain, although I haven't found info concerning the ship which was carrying these planes.

Best regards, Aleks

They were carried by the Hordena.

AVV and Ironmachine
Very many tanks for the information and that web site. The 'Kerun', I now discover, was reported to be carrying 20 aircraft, 44 tanks, 1,000 machineguns, 2,000 rifles together with ammunition and other war material. I suspect she might be the Hordena but would be interested in any comments.
Warm regards

I don't think the Kerun and the Hordena are the same ship. There are a number of reasons for that:
1) Hordena was not a Soviet ship; it sailed under Panama's flag (it was owned by the Scotia Corportation).
2) It carried, in addition to the 22 Aero A.101, 48 spare engines, 22 million rifle cartridges, 30,000 uniforms and (unknown quantity) artillery shells of different calibers.
3) She was intercepted by the Almirante Cervera on 16 April (not in June).

In addition, I can't find anything about a Kuran or a Kerun. But, more important, there was no ship that was captured by the Nationals while carrying 44 tanks. So this ship is a mistery for me.

Regards.

Hello you mention Czech planes in this exchange. My grandfather was involved in a big scheme to send arms from Czechoslovakia to Spain which apparently didn't work out. How can I find out more about this? I am new to this forum. :)
