Ok, that makes it somewhat more precise, although there is still room for interpretation how "firmly" Nationalists hold some places before they were overrun by Republicans during the initial stages of Civil War.

I guess that Guadalajara fits for the category. Nationalists took over the city, but Republicans took over it on 22.7.1936.

If I have understand correctly what I have read, these were province capitals which were only briefly under Nationalist rule before falling to Republicans:

The biggest problem that I have this question is how to interprete the situations on those province capitals, where military rebels and their allies took control only for brief moment before they were overrun by the surrounding province which remained loyal to republican government. The question demands very good knowledge of the Spanish local history during SCW.

How many Finnish volunteers fought in the SCW at the Nationalist side and how many of them were killed in Spain?

Well, the question of Finnish volunteers at the Nationalist side seems to be too difficult. As a Finn I just could not resist to put it. I hope that it makes things easier to mention that 4 Finnish volunteers at Nationalist side died during SCW - two were killed in combat and two perished in granade accident. For comparison: 67 Finnish citizens and ethnically Finnish American/Canadian volunteers were KIA in Spain when fighting for Republican cause. The number of casualties reflect to some extent the corresponding numbers of Finnish volunteers at Republican and Nationalist sides.

So the question remains: how many Finnish volunteers fought at the Nationalist side in the SCW? All of them were Finnish citizens, not ethnically Finnish Americans or Canadians (which often are taken in account as Finns when counting Finnish volunteers at the Republican side).

The days have passed and no answer or even guess has come to the question how many Finnish volunteers fought at the Nationalist side in the SCW. It was too difficult question (I guess). The right answer is 14. Most of them had some background in far right politics in Finland but adventurous spirit played probably a stronger part than political thinking in their decision to go to Spain. Although only two were killed in combat, all served in frontline and many were wounded. Not a picnic trip and the memories of service time in Spanish Foreign Legion left mixed feelings.

Nationalist "internationals" are interesting subject and there is quite recent and decent book in English available about them: "Franco´s International Brigades" (Christopher Othen 2013): http://www.brightreview.co.uk/ARTICLE-A ... rists.html
