The notes to go with the comment made by Moscardo state...
The question of whether there were hostages or not in the Alcazar was thus laid to rest by this statement of Moscards after the war. See Herbert Southworth, El Mito de la Cruzada Franco (Paris 1963)

From this telephone the Colonel Moscardó communicated with the outside. When they forced it,to render the fortress with the death of his son ,Luis of 24 years old, Moscardó answered…" The Fortress not surrender".Luis was executed.

Luis Moscardó and his father talked for the last time on July 23, 1936. Luis was executed a month later, August 23, during a "saca" of the prison of Toledo.

Sorry am not fluent in english.

Some photos and a map.
Sources: Black and white from http://toledoolvidado.blogspot.com/ , a superb page with a lot of images about civil war period, and http://www.uclm.es/ceclm/b_virtual/imag ... htm#toledo.

Hand-made photomap of the defensive perimeter. Those buildings no longer exists.

It is difficult to know the real number of hostages in the Alcazar. Some were arrested before the siege began, other while searching food in the houses near the Alcazar. The number varies according to the sources between 10 and 50. It seems that some of the hostages were killed after the end of the siege (by order of General Varela), which caused the protest of Colonel Moscardo.

Finally some data about the siege. Source: "Defensa del Alcazar" by Angel Palomino. 1995.
