Best military history of the war? Eng or Span
Best military history of the war? Eng or Span
Went through the reading list and have some of the more notable works.Thomas, Beevor, etc.
Is there a military history of the war without the political component? I mean similar would be how the U.S. Civil War tends to be written in terms of military history, both army operational and strategic with division sized movements described in the battles. Is there a Spanish Civil War equivalent of Catton? (Would Martinez Bande's work be these)
English or Spanish is fine. I recently ordered La Guerra de Franco by Cesar Vidal.

Despite their age and "ideology", Bande's works are probably the best you wil find for what you are looking for. Another good work is Historia militar de la Guerra Civil Española by Juan Blázquez Miguel; there are six volumes IIRC.

This is relatively short & quite good, focuses exclusively on the military aspects
Estrategia y Tactica en la Guerra de Espana 1936-1939, Carlos Engel, Almena, 2008

Also short and good is Historia militar de una guerra civil. Estrategia y tácticas de la guerra de España by Gabriel Cardona, Ed. Flor del viento, 2006.

Palgrave MacMillian is listing a book called "The Spanish Civil War: A Military History" by Jorge Martinez Reverte in December 2011. I wonder if anyone might have a review of his previous works which seem to have only been released in Spanish?
Re: Best military history of the war? Eng or Span
Good news! I read both of his Battle of Ebro and Madrid books.

Orwell1984
I have tried to find the Jorge Martinez Reverte book on the Palgrave Macmillan web site without success. I know some people, such as Amaza=on, are showing it from December 2011 but the 'publishers' do not appear to be doing so. Anyone any suggestions?

I got my information on this title off of Amazon. I looked through Palgrave Macmillan's Fall catalogue which lists titles coming out up to Dec 2011 and didn't see this book either. Hopefully it will be a late edition or has been pushed back until the Winter Catalogue. I will be keeping an eye out for it and will update if I find anything out.

Yes, I have it and I have read it.
Re: Best military history of the war? Eng or Span
Recommend it? How does it compare to Cardona's work above?

Re: Best military history of the war? Eng or Span
I would not recommend it as a first book about the SCW. It is a very dry reading, quoting official plans and participant's recalls. OOB are not very detailed. Almost nothing in the way of maps. All in all, a good complement if you already have previous knowledge about the operations, but not the way to begin a study of the SCW. IMHO, of course.

Thanks.
My company is Spanish and they send me books twice a year. Also looking at Historia de la Guerra civil española

Any opinion of that title?
