Civil war related to see in Madrid?

#1

Post by Marcus » 28 Dec 2011, 22:25

I will be in Madrid for a few days soon, is there anything Civil War or WW2 related to see there? This time I will only be in Madrid itself, not travel to any other towns in the area.

Thanks.

Welcome to our chaotic city !

In this location, was the former "Cuartel de la Montaña",now occupied by an Egyptian Temple: Street Pº Pintor Rosales, s/n with the Street Ferraz 1,Metro Plaza de España.
But no many remains of the War in Madrid, now !

Well, there are for example three well-preserved small bunkers from the Civil War in the Parque del Oeste:

Are there any memorials or statues related to the war?
You have the Arco de la Victoria de la Ciudad Universitaria:
http://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arco_de_la_Victoria
and very near you can find the Edificio-monumento a los caídos por Madrid:
http://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Junta_Muni ... _-_Aravaca
Also, in the Parque del Cuartel de la Montaña that von thoma had mentioned there is a memorial for those killed in that place:

Hope that helps.

I can also recommend, the Naval Museum,in Paseo del Prado 5 Street (Near the Cibeles' Square),the better military museum, that remains in Madrid Capital. Leaving apart military subjects, don't forget the visit at the Prado Museum,is a unique experience. I wish you a good and enriching travel !

The most interesting sites about SCW are the Casa de Campo and the Ciudad Universitaria. Both are easily accessibles.

The surviving buildings of the ciudad Universitaria have a lot of bullets hits and scratches caused by shrapnel.

At the park surroundig the Hospital Clinico there is a crater of a mine.

In these maps can see the line of front and the situation of bunkers and trenches in the Casa de Campo.

At evening of 15th of november a unit of "Regulares" crossed the river about 400 meters north of the Puente de los Franceses reaching the Stadium and the Faculty of Architecture. Today there is only a section of the last footbridge, but unfortunately covered with water most of the year. To reach this point follow the path for cycling.

The supply of the column in the Ciudad Universitaria was very dangerous.Wounded soldiers had to wait until night to be evacuated. In order to avoid the lethal "Curva de la Muerte"(just a few meters from republican positions) was built the "Pista del Generalisimo", a track of concrete.

Yes, it was a very nice town to walk around in and I found the people friendly, the only problem was the lack of English skills even in stores and museums.

Why on earth was the nice Museo de America in Spanish only? The lady in the ticket office apologized for the fact that both the map and all the info was only in Spanish but at least a summary in English would help the museum be so much more welcoming to the tourists.

Yes Madrid is probably unique for a European citys usage of the English language. Very few people understand English there.

I was there a few years back and if I didn't know some basic Spanish, I would have starved to death.

Re Civil war stuff to see in Madrid. The house where Jose Antonio Primoe de Rivera was born is still in use with a few symbols and plaques outside on the Calle de Genova, not far from the Colon underground bus station for the airport.
