Light Cruiser "Leipzig" in the Spanish Civil War.
Light Cruiser "Leipzig" in the Spanish Civil War.
Hello to all ; a little doubt here................
The Light Cruiser "Leipzig" in the Spanish Civil War.
On August 20, 1936, the "Leipzig" sailed to Spain. The light cruiser carried out inspection trips off the Spanish coast and visited several ports. The "Leipzig" remained in Spanish waters till October 08, 1936 and then was replaced by the light cruiser "Köln". On October 10, 1936, the "Leipzig" returned to Wilhelmshaven. From October 14, 1936 to February 3, 1937, the light cruiser stayed at the dockyard. Beginning in March 1937 the "Leipzig" went again to Spain, where she replaced the cruiser "Köln". On May 19, the light cruiser returned to Kiel. On June 01, the "Leipzig" sailed back to Spain and visited several Mediterranean ports. On June 29, 1938, the light cruiser returned to Kiel.
In the picture below, a reconnaissance plane can be seen in flight from the German ship....Any idea about the type and nationality of that aircraft? TIA.

Looks like French to me...

Hello to all ; yes, could be for the colors of the tail rudder, and Italian? Cheers. Raúl M .
Re: Light Cruiser "Leipzig" in the Spanish Civil War.
Italian planes were flying a half-white rudder with a black Saint Andrew's cross painted in it. This doesn't look like it.
The enemy had superiority in numbers, his tanks were more heavily armoured, they had larger calibre guns with nearly twice the effective range of ours, and their telescopes were superior. 5 RTR 19/11/41

Re: Light Cruiser "Leipzig" in the Spanish Civil War.
Only the Italian planes fighting in Spain carried those markings. The picture does not seem to have been taken in Spain, as the ship and the aircraft are very close to land and the plane does not look like "Spanish" (neither the model nor the markings). Is there a date for the picture? Anyway, as I said before, the aircraft looks like a French model to me.Urmel wrote:Italian planes were flying a half-white rudder with a black Saint Andrew's cross painted in it. Hello to all ; something more................
The Light Cruiser "Leipzig" in the Spanish Civil War.
I agree with a mate of another forum that he plane in the first picture was a French LeO.206, which served with the French Navy's Air Branch (thanks Hicks)....and as told by another member in the same forum, the shore in the picture, matches with the sector between Hendaya and San Juan de Luz (thanks jmunrev).........
