Armenians in the SCW?

Anybody know anything about Armenian presence in the SCW, either International Brigade members, Soviet volunteers, or Armenian-born Spanish citizens fighting on either side?

There certainly were Armenian or ethnically Armenian members of International Brigades (IB). I quickly browsed Spanish sites about this and found some mentioning that few Armenians served in mixed units - I guess there was nothing such as a Armenian unit in IB (?). Armenians may have been labelled by other criteria than by their ethnical background (one should take in account that Armenians have been living in many countries).

Maybe something can be found if one goes carefully through various sources. For example at least 13 Palestinian IB volunteers have been identified as Armenians (http://es.scribd.com/doc/231068245/Brig ... les#scribd).

Of the Soviet advisers and other Soviet military personnal in Spain it is quite possible that there may have been Armenians among them - there are some books specialised in Soviets in Spanish Civil War and maybe one could find some Armenian names in the namelists or person indexes of these books. One possiblity is Paul Whelan´s "Soviet Airmen in the Spanish Civil War" and others may be found in the recommended reading thread.

In February 1937 the Armenian General Torcon offered to recruit 20.000 Armenian anti-communist volunteers in Greece, Syria and Egypt to fight for the Nationals. He asked only for travel, maintenance and clothing expenses.
In March the National High Command refused the offer, officially because the Spanish troops available were more tan enough and also due to the possibility that this Armenian tropos may cause problems with the Non-intervention Committee. But it seems that the real reason was the lack of money to fulfill Torcon's terms.
