The official AHF Spanish Civil War quiz thread

#1

Post by Marcus » 20 Jan 2004, 22:24

The quiz threads we've had running in the Lounge for a while has been a great success, so I think it is time to get one started in this section too.
The rules are very simple:
The first one to post the correct answer to a question, posts a new question (must be on the Spanish Civil War) and so on.

The Legion Condor used normal rank insignias of the Spanish National (and post-war) Army. The captain (capitán) has a insignia of three stars of 6 points, and the first lieutenant (teniente) has a insignia of two stars.

http://www.ejercito.mde.es/personal/index.html (Spanish Army official page)

The Republican Army had different rank insignias, based in the French model of bars (not stars)

P.D. At the times of SCW the upper grade was Capitán general with insignia of four "rombos" (engl. rhombuses?). Actually she is the insignia of General de Ejército, engl. General of Army).

Oberleutnant actually, the rank of Hauptmann has one eight pointed star.

See for example "Legion Condor" by Roger James Bender which includes that very photo.

Actually the rank is Capitán,one eight pointed star is Comandante (= Major)...The Rank "First Leutnant" didn´t exist in Spanish Army (At least not in SCW).
We could say that Leutnant = Alférez and Oberleutnant = Teniente; But even this wouldn´t be totally correct.

Javichu,

I'm talking about the German ranks used, not the Spanish equivalents.
