Rising Sun Badge

The Rising sun is the official emblem of the Australian Army, and worn with pride on all headgear.

It's origins are rather obscure, but it's generally accepted to have been used in one form or another by the various organisations within the colonies of Australia from approximately the 1820's. Long before Federation of the states in 1901. It's first formal form for the military in Australia came in 1902,and since then has passed through several design changes until the current shape. It's arguably the most treasured item of an Australian military person.

It's the least returned item of serving personnel when they leave the Services! :)

It's always struck me as odd that both Australia and Japan have such a strong association with the rising sun. And that both were destined to be such mortal enemies during WWII.

I wonder if the Japanese ever commented on the badge worn by the Australians? I've never seen anything mentioned in print.
