Did the Japanese plan to invade India?

#1

Post by Imad » 12 Jan 2009, 23:26

Hello
Is there evidence that the Japanese actually wanted to include India in their Greater Asia Co prosperity Sphere?
I have not read yet that they actually wanted to expand out of Burma and it would seem they were constrained to launch into Imphal/Kohima because of Wingate's penetrations behind their lines which made them realise just how vulnerable they were to a reposte from the direction of India.
Any input on this subject is highly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

India was not originally announced to be part of the Greater East Asia Co-Prosperity Sphere, but the Japanese did want to see the British driven out of India. For this a successful invasion and conquest would be necessary, the Indian rebels couldn't do it alone, so an occupied India would end up as part of the GEACPS by default in the event of Japanese victory.

I recall reading that by 1944 Japan was desperate for a victory, and having no chance of beating the americans anywhere decided to gain that victory by beating the British, hence Imphal/Kohima. The Japanese expected to "win as usual" against the British.
