Keep and eye for for the book Whirlwind: The Air War Against Japan, 1942-1945 by Barrett Tillman.

It's only just been released (I'm still awaiting arrival of my copy) but promises to be the most detailed book yet on air-raids over Japan.

Here's part of the blurb on the book:
WHIRLWIND is the first book to tell the complete, awe-inspiring story of the Allied air war against Japan—the most important strategic bombing campaign inhistory. From the audacious Doolittle raid in 1942 to the atomic bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945, award-winning historian Barrett Tillman recounts the saga from the perspectives of American and British aircrews who flew unprecedented missions over thousands of miles of ocean, as well as of the generals and admirals who commanded them.

Whether describing the experiences of bomber crews based in China or the Marianas, fighter pilots on Iwo Jima, or carrier aviators at sea, Tillman provides vivid details of the lives of the fliers and their support personnel. Whirlwind takes readers into the cockpits and gun turrets of the mighty B-29 Superfortress, the largest bomber built up to that time. Tillman dramatically re-creates the sweep of wartime emotions that crews endured on fifteen-hour missions, grappling with the extreme tedium of cramped spaces and with adrenaline spikes in flak-studded skies, knowing that a bailout would put them at the mercy of a merciless enemy or an unforgiving sea.

Never has the Japanese side of the story been so thoroughly examined. If Washington, D.C., represented a “second front” in Army-Navy rivalry, the situation in Tokyo approached a full-contact sport. Tillman’s description of Japan’s willfully inadequate approach to civil defense is eye-opening. Similarly, he examines the mind-set in Tokyo’s war cabinet, which ignored the atomic destruction of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, requiring the emperor’s personal intervention to avert a ghastly Allied invasion.

Hi Chris, welcome to the Forum

I don't think I've ever seen such an extensive list published before on a two day event. I wish I could keep source notes as well as that! 8O

Without looking through your sources, do you have any identified Japanese units, airfields they used, or Command they were under?

Yes, I have some info but it's useless because I can't match Japanese intercepting units to American attacking units.

Nope as your URL for this site was entirely different then a specific one for task force 58 as you asked, i only entered the site prevalent to your request...was not sure if the site in general you listed could or would be specific enough for the 2 days and the task force you requested specifically as opposed to a general inquiry.

Hi Chris

I'm 51 and still nothing happens!

Have some patience and sometimes you have to tease other readers of the forum in giving out information. Its not that they wont give but they have to be given an interest. Clearly you know loads more about this topic than I, but as we and other research, so we learn.

A big problem studying WW2 is the information we can access from the defeated side, in this case the Japanese. Partly because their records were destroyed in the intensive bombing campaign, partly because history is written by the victors, partly because of crimes committed and partly because no one wants to hear the story of the vets.

See the thread re those last two points

Tetsuzō Iwamoto, a top Japanese air ace looks to have shot down a F4U near Mobara-airbase outskirts of Tokyo, Japan, February 16 1945, see his entry in Wikipedia

I do know there was a 2nd Lt. Daniel V. Hayes from VMF-216 lost returning to the USS Wasp from
a mission Honshu (no details). There was also a pilot from VMF-217, 1st Lt. Rolland V. Vaughn, Jr.
lost on the same mission, as well as VMF-217's C.O. Rolland Vaughn. Still looking for specifics--the C.O. of -216 at that time might still be around.

Actually, Hayes was with VMF-217. A division from VMF-216 witnessed his plane going into the water while they were returning from the raid.

Something else to consider for USN/MC losses was friendly fire. One of my dad's flight school classmates was Ens. Paul Spradling of Bennington's VF-82. He was returning to the task group, apparently with an inoperable IFF, and was killed by one of the DDs in the screen. One of five CV-20 pilots lost that day. Years ago I met two VF-82 pilots who said that Spradling was flying with at least one other F6F, and the DD's recognition/AA officer should've been canned. I don't think anyone followed up the case.
