Height Of Hills Peter & Oboe On Iwo Jima

#1

Post by Honza » 03 Jan 2011, 10:50

These two hills were in the centre of the island and were fought over and captured by the 3rd Division. They overlooked airfield #2 and so it was vital to capture them ASAP, so that the airfield was free from interdiction by enemy fire.

The strange thing is that these two hills were refered to as hill 199-O and hill 200-P. Yet on my map of the island with contours they are placed well above the 300ft mark.

They are in a central location on the island near to Hill 382, so they must have been above 199ft and 200ft high. So why are they called hills 199-O and 200-P?

Does anyone know how high they actually were?

Hi Honza,

the numbers 199 and 200 do not refer to height in this case. They refer to map grids.

If you check:

http://www.allworldwars.com/image/056/I ... y002sm.jpg

you will find the numbers. Numbers 119 and 200 are the grid numbers, O and P are for the letters (locations) within those numbered grids.

If you have any other questions, please let me know. I am currently writing a book on Iwo Jima, and am glad to help.

Kind regards,

Peter
