Liberation of Manila in the Philippines
Liberation of Manila in the Philippines
I was a toddler living about three blocks from the University of Sto. Tomas in Manila Philippines wherein hundreds of US citizens were interned by the Japanese during WWII. What was the title of the US Army outfit which liberated the compound? I remembered seeing soldiers with patches of the 86th Blackhawk Division and also some with 3rd Armored.
Re: Liberation of Manila in the Philippines
Wiki says the US 1st Calvary division was responsible for the liberation of the compound. The 86th Infantry fought in the ETO, but was later transferred to the PTO in August '45. It arrival in the Philippines coincided with the Japanese surrender. The 3rd armored never saw service in the PTO.

I imagine there are no longer members of the 1st Cav who participated in the operation and who are still living. Too bad cause I've got a whole lot of story to tell. Thanks Kingfish.
