From United States Naval Aviation 1910-1995:
"The possibility of increasing the range of small aircraft, by operating them as towed gliders, was demonstrated at the Naval Aircraft Factory when Lieutenant Commanders William H. McClure and Robert W. Denbo hooked their F4Fs to tow lines streamed behind a twin-engined BD (Army A-20), cut their engines and were towed for an hour at 180 knots at 7,000 feet."
As far as I know, not much came from this test . . . just another one of those "yes, we can do it if we really, really, have to" things. And, of course, not really a Pacific and Asia topic as the Naval Aircraft Factory was in Philadelphia PA.

July - August 1945, the last carrier strikes on the Japanese home islands. Task Force 38 is commanded by VAdm John Sidney “Slew” McCain.
Amongst the members of his staff he has an operations officer and two assistant operations officers. Besides that they, all three, were pre-war graduates of the US Naval Academy, since 7 December 1941 all three of them had four things in common in terms of their experiences in the Pacific war.
Who were these three officers and what were the four experiences or career events they had in common?
