Hi Mimbrogno,

"Some of the plot points of the movie (Operation Pettycoat) were based on real-life incidents. Most notable were scenes set at the opening of WW-II, based on the actual sinking of the submarine USS Sealion (SS-195), sunk at the pier at Cavite Navy Yard in the Philippines, and Commander Sherman's letter to the supply department on the inexplicable lack of toilet paper, based on an actual letter to the supply department of Mare Island Naval Shipyard by Lieutenant Commander James Wiggin Coe of the submarine Skipjack (SS-184), ."

Thank you Mimbrogno,

Next Question: This was the second of three separate major Japanese ground offensives during the Guadalcanal campaign. Name of battle, Japanese unit and its commander?

Good evening!

Was it battle of Edson's range, where Japanese 35th Infantry brigade under General Kawaguchi took part?

Best regards, Aleks

Hello AVV,

You are very close! The one I'm looking for took place in very early October 1942. Action is named after a river....

HI Robb,

It looks like AVV is not going to respond to your clue. Can you give the answer?
"Air superiority is a condition for all operations, at sea, in land, and in the air." - Air Marshal Arthur Tedder.

Good evening, gentlemen!

Sorry, I have forgotten about this quiz. :(
Still, better late than never... So, my second (and hope last) version is battle at river Matanikau on October 6-9, 1942 between the US Marines and units of Japanese 2nd Inf. Division under generals Masao Maruyama and Yumio Nasu.

Best regards, Aleks

I think AVV got it right with his first answer.

Edson (or Bloddy) ridge was the second major Japanese attack on Guadacanal. The first was Ichiki's attack at the mouth of the Ilu, and the third being the big attack in mid-October by the IJA's 2nd division against the 1/7 Marines and 1/164th infantry.

The one I believe Robb is referring to was a planned attack by the units mentioned, but this was forestalled by a Marines spoiling attack.

Hi All,

Over to you AVV.

I may have made it a bit vague, sorry if I have. I was llooking for this
"Between October 1 and October 5, Tokyo Express runs delivered troops from the 2nd Infantry Division, including their commander, Lieutenant General Masao Maruyama. These troops consisted of units from the 4th, 16th, and 29th Infantry Regiments.[30] In an attempt to exploit the advantage gained in the September Matanikau action, Maruyama deployed the three battalions of the 4th Infantry Regiment with additional supporting units under Major General Yumio Nasu along the west side of the Matanikau River south of Point Cruz with three companies from the 4th Infantry Regiment placed on the east side of the river."

Thanks, Robb!

A simple question, I think. Who is the man standing near German officer and what was his role in war at Asia?

As there has not been a question asked for over a month, I will ask a question.

On the 21st of February 1942, the lone Lockheed Hudson and two CAC Wirraways of RAAF 24 Squadron at Rabaul were ordered to attack the Japanese invasion fleet, which consisted of aircraft carriers, cruisers, destroyers and transports.

How did the Commanding Officer of 24 Squadron, Wing Commander J R Lerew respond to this request?

Seeing that there has been no reply to my question for a couple of weeks, I am giving the answer

Lerew replied to the request for 24 Squadron to attack the Japanese fleet with signal "nos morituri te salutamus", the Roman gladiators' cry to spectators at the Colosseum, "we who are about to die salute you".

The order for 24 Squadron to attack was rescinded.

The forum is open for a new question.
"Air superiority is a condition for all operations, at sea, in land, and in the air." - Air Marshal Arthur Tedder.
