Two soldiers of SS Heimwehr Danzig cautiously approach the post office building where the Poles had organized a defense (September 1939). The building was very strong and the defenders had been armed by the Polish Army and were commanded by ex-Polish Army officers. Almost all of them were civilians, wore no uniforms and fought in the city that did not belong to Poland and so most were executed by the Germans as Partisans after their surrender. Three defenders later died as a result of severe wounds...

A 10.5cm IeFH18, the standard light howitzer of the German Army, with the barrell in full recoil as it fires a round into the post office building in the Battle of Poland (September 1939). Note the white letter D painted on the back side of the gun shield, which indicates the fourth gun in the battery. The white spots on the helmets are the Totenkopf emblems...

Here are some photos from my personal collection. These three are from Inf. Rgt. 502 and the attack on the village of Wyssotschek 3.12.41. Part of the 290th Infantry Division, Army Group Nord.
