Hello

Nice topic with very interesting pictures, thanks for sharing.

Did you go outside the city, and is there any trace of the fighting left - beside monuments and restored sites?

Regards
Kurt

Thank you very much Kurt!

Yes, I was outside the city, but the trace of the war does not show. The time covered over the traces...

Best greeting

I was there last year and saw many of the things you have posted but did you not visit the German war cemetery in Rossoschka with the Soviet One opposite (paid for by Germany) and also take a drive to the house where Paulus surrendered?

Notices on way in to the cemetery

Across the road from the above is the German cemetery. No individual graves but a mass grave with a wall going round it with the names of German soldiers:

And one memorial card attached to the wall:

The house where Paulus surrendered. We got bitten alive by mosquitoes when finding this one.

Bullet holes can still be seen in the city:

Did somebody here visit Pitomnik? Is it possible to visit Pitomnik with a normal car?

I think Pitomnik doesn't exist anymore. However, Gurmack is now the airfield for Volgograd and for any WW2 buffs, it is exciting to see Volgograd in the distance as the airplane comes in to land. When we took off we had a better view of the city and the rolling steppes. When I got off the plane and looked around I tried to imagine the horrific scenes which were taking place 70+ years ago but it is of course impossible.

I can't remember the name of the street etc for the Paulus house as were were brought by a tour guide in a taxi. It is a private house but there is a plaque on the wall. The guide said very few people ask to be brought there.

The grain elevator was one of the most impressive sights.

Also they have tops of T34s on plinths which mark the extent of the German advance.

This is not the house where Paulus was captured but where he was interrogated after he was captured. I'm almost positive that the coordinates below show the location of the house.

48°35'10.86"N 44°25'59.68"E

I was able to compare this youtube clip https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=srYFLp6D5iY with Google Earth.

Thank you for sharing.

Can't tell if they "Russians" are glorifying or remembering that war is horrific.
