Note: The successful German Blitz in France temporarily decreased political support for isolationists, resulting in Wendell Willkie, a dark-horse businessman and pro-British interventionist, getting the Republican Convention's nomination for President. As the election approached, Willkie switched from interventionism by accusing F.D.R. of being too eager to get America into the European war. Roosevelt, the ultimate politician, blamed business for the Great Depression and promised to keep American boys out of the European war, thus politically cutting off Willkie in domestic and foreign policy. ... After winning the election in 1940, Roosevelt switched back to interventionism and eventually enlisted Republican businessmen to implement mass production in support of the war effort, which created a labor shortage and ended the Great Depression.
