8/13/1942, Informed Military Men Believe Japs Still Planning to Attack Siberia, India Invasion on Hold for Monsoon

Note: Stalin had been laying out the heavy guilt trip to his Anglo-U.S. Allies, pressuring for a second front launched in France to divert German forces. He felt the British considered the Soviets as "farmhands." In a recent meeting with Churchill, Stalin accused the Allies of letting the Russians do all of the dying. Churchill countered by pointing out the British had been fighting the Germans long before the Soviets entered the war; Stalin had originally left the British holding the bag. ... The logistics for staging a cross-channel invasion had not yet been solved. To temporarily appease Stalin, the Anglo-U.S. informational services released stories designed to show that the western Allies were drawing German resources away from the Eastern Front. Japan unable to invade Siberia due to Allied Pacific operations would have qualified as a second-front contribution. ... However, Stalin knew from intelligence sources that, even before Pearl Harbor, Japan had decided on southward expansion. In fact, the Red Army had deterred Japan's Siberia ambitions in the late '30s by steamrolling overextended Japanese positions in Manchuria. (Overconfidence from easy Soviet victories against Japan contributed to Stalin's disastrous decision to invade Finland in late 1939.)
