Understanding the Enigma machine
Many historians claim that breaking the codes of the Enigma cyphering machine, used by the Nazi German military, had advanced the end of World War Two by at least two years.

German messages encrypted on the original Enigma were first broken by three Polish mathematicians working for Polish military intelligence: Marian Rejewski, Jerzy Różycki and Henryk Zygalski. They were all pre-war graduates of Poznań University. It should not be surprising, therefore, that it is the city of Poznań, the capital of the midwestern Wielkopolska region, which has come out with the initiative to open a museum dedicated to the legendary Enigma machine.
Our correspondent Kalina Olejniczak spoke to Hanna Surma, spokesperson for Poznań City Hall, Ewa Semrau from the local Tourism Organization and Szymon Mazur, the man behind the idea of the Enigma Museum... [/quote]

The choice of the building to be adapted to the needs of the new museum is not accidental. In 2007, before Zamek unveiled a monument dedicated to Jerzy Różycki, and Henryk Marian Rejewskiemu Zygalskiemu - mathematicians who broke the Enigma code. Building next to the monument will thus complement the history of deciphering by Poznań in 1932, the principles of encoding messages by German machine. Were taken into account the fact that the Zamek worked before the war Faculty of Mathematics, in which they learned cryptographers, and place the Collegium Historicum work Cipher Bureau of the Polish Army.

- I am glad that the room will be made available by the University. Adam Mickiewicz University, whose graduates are finally distinguished cryptographers Poznan - adds president Wisniewski.

The construction of the Museum of Enigma is expected to cost 15 million zł. Marshal's Office acknowledged, however, for this purpose the EU grant in the amount of 10.3 million zł. Other costs will cover the creation of institutions already City.

- It is not only a museum but also a place, which is to encourage young people to take an interest in science. The facility would like to show the history of Poznan cryptology in an interesting way. Visitors will be able to count not only on the traditional exhibits, but also a replica of the machine with which you will be able to encrypt any message. We consider exploring different paths - the traditional and the more advanced, where going to the individual rooms, you will have to solve various puzzles in order to be able to go further - explains the initiator of the Museum of the Enigma - Szymon Mazur, a journalist of Radio Mercury.

Museum is also to be a kind of time machine to visitors.

- It will be a museum of success, because feat Poznań undoubtedly was one of these. Visitors want to move in time to the 30s of the twentieth century - so that everyone can feel the atmosphere of that era - adds Szymon Mazur.
