Sorry been busy. Thanks Lit. and Henryk:) Henryk the link is great, only just a bit too far south for the towns I needed. Would have liked that map from that site. Researched but there doesn't seem to be one from further north.

German names, which tyskaorden wrote, are German names of Czech towns.

These towns never were German. All these towns were in Czechoslovakia since 1918, some of these were in SudetenGau, but during the war it was in Protektorat Böhmen und Mähren (not in Third Reich). It is true, that before war in many of towns lived more German speaking people than Czech speaking, but all of them were citizens of Czechoslovakia.

Port Chicago, California; after WWII this suburb naval ammo base near San Francisco (30+ miles NE) became Concord, California. Don't know if the Cold War era Naval Weapons Station Concord is still at Concord, Calif.


CANADA
======
Frobisher AFB (US Army Air Corps Base) [built in 1942]), Northwest Territories, Canada is now Iqaluit, Nunavut, Canada.

CHAD
====
Ft Lamy, French Equitorial Africa, is now Ndjamena, Chad (capital city)

Ft Archambault, French Equitorial Africa is now Sarh

MYANMAR
========
Ft Hertz, Burma is now Putao, Myanmar (extreme north near Namni Pass. Wingate, Chennault and Stillwell can provide detailed grid location)

CHINA
=====

Harbin, (Manchuria) is now Shenyang

Port Arthur (Manchuria) is now Lushun, China. It's been known (and cited on maps ) as Dalani because the various powers changed the name when in control of the naval port

WWII's Chungking, China is now Chongqing.

Won't even attempt to post some English language Pacific Island name changes and let alone the different spellings used by different nations eg the Senkaku-Diaoyutai Islands in dispute between China and Japan.

I was talking with my grandmother who was first generation here in the US in 1930. Every time I talk to her about this she mentions Vis - ko - va (rough phonic) and my mother tells me the city/town was renamed. Also a connection with East Prussia pops up. I felt like this would be the place to go because the town/city was probably renamed after WWII. If anybody can help that would be great!

For phonetic search of Viskova (present and past place names): choose Eastern Europe, selected city: Russia, Kaliningrad, search method: Beider-Morse.
Two possibilities:
1) Hohenfürst, Wyszkowo, populated place, 54°20' N 20°06' E now Poland, was East Prussia, Poland, 48.8 kilometers SSW of Kaliningrad (K�nigsberg) 54°43' N 20°30' E.
2) Vychkovo, Бычково, Bychkovo, populated place, 54°22' N 21°03' E, now Russia, was east Prussia, 51.8 kilometers SE of Kaliningrad (K�nigsberg) 54°43' N 20°30' E.

[Karelia]

All the ancient Finnish names in the area of "Karelian Isthmus" (=Karjalan Kannas, lower red area in the map), which was annexed to "Leningrad province" were changed to Russian names, which do not have anything to do with the local history, but are based on the names of various communists or soviet war "heros". One of the few exceptions is the previous capital of Finnish Karelia, Viipuri, which retained it's Russian name version Wyborg.

However the lost areas of "Laatokka Karelia" (=Laatokan Karjala, middle of the red area in the map) and "Border Karelia" (=Raja-Karjala, top of the red area), which were annexed to the (then) "Karelian-Finnish Socialist Soviet State" retained their Finnish names - without any Finnish speaking population left...

Here's a list of various ex-Finnish Karelian locations with the orginal Finnish names (= suomalaisnimi) with conjugation forms and the new post-war names (= nykyinen venäläisnimi), either in Russian (in Karelian Isthmus) or Finnish (in Laatokka or Border Karelia).

The Finnish language edition of Ilya Moshtshanski's book Sturm Karelskoyo vala contains supplementary sections that also list the naming changes Soviets made up for the conquered Karelian towns. These supplements apparently are not included in the original book. Same method seem to apply as in the case of above-mentioned Eastern Prussia. This renaming took place during 1948-9. During the occupation of 1940-1 the names had not been changed. These are names from the Karelian isthmus only.

Most of these completely new names are based on some soldier fallen during 1939-45. Some even have been named after a private. (The Finnish translitteration conversion into English translitteration is done by me)

The current Shangyang is the former Mukden.

It is NOT Harban.

Mukden (now Shengyang) is the city on the South Manchurian Railroad.

Harban, the city further north of Mukden (now Shangyang), is on the Chinese Eastern Railroad, between Chita, USSR and Vladivostok.

I own a cyber Harbin rice peva (the original Russian brewery still brewing real beer !) to those who cought my mistake. Thus: no cyber Harbin peva !
