He was killed by an american machine gun when he and some other soldiers tried to leave Willebadessen in a civilian car, trying to spy out the american lines.
Bachmann was not "spying", he was the Landrat of Warburg Landkreis and was killed when his car was hit by an AT grenade. According to a witness, the son of retired Major Freiherr von Wrede, he had just borrowed Wrede's Major's uniform because he wanted to face the Americans in uniform, being a former Admiral. I doubt there were any other soldiers in the car, but most probably his driver and assistant.

Note the similar case of Ex-Admiral and Landrat Rolf Carls, who was killed in an air raid on Bad Oldesloe a few weeks later.
