I.D. Austrian unit from writing?

Postby trickcyclist on 02 Jul 2012 22:46

I can see "10. Comp." in this writing.

Are there any other clues to the identity of the unit?

Feldpost 481. Might indicate the location? Some officers names as well.

This is what I think I can read, perhaps somebody else can translate/correct it.

Fp. 481. vom 29./IX 18
Lieber Freund!
Da ich infolge des Schreibstillstandes
annehmen muß, daß Du meine letzte
Nachricht nicht erhalten hast, benütze
ich das Bild nach der Feldmesse vom
17. Aug.d.J., mit dem Reg. Kmdr -
rechts vom Obltn. Novak der Kmp. Kommandant
Obstltn. von Cordier, ein sehr beliebter Herr,
rechts von der Standarte Hptm. …,
links vom Altar die 7. u. 10. Komp. etc.,
um Dir für Deine letzte Nachricht vom
29./VII. herzl. zu danken.
Auf Deine Frage betreffs Herbst-
urlaubs kann ich dir mitteilen, daß ich
morgen oder übermorgen denselben
antreten kann.
Hoffe zuversichtlich auf baldiges

Hello Nichte,

very good work. Allow me just two small improvements:

Dein Josef [....].

Here's my translation. In the middle part I had to simplify the structure of the sentence since various parts are nested together in a way almost impossible to translate:

F[eld]p[ost letter No.] 481 from Sept. 29th, [19]18

Dear friend!

Due to the halt in writing each other
I must assume that you didn't receive
my last letter. So I use the picture taken after
the field Mass on Aug. 17th this year with the
regimental commander to cordially thank you for your
last letter from July 29th.
To the right of 1st Lt. Novak the regimental CO
Lt.Col. von Cordier, a very popular man.
To the right of the standard Cpt. Riccabona,
left of the altar the 7th and 10th company and so on.
With regard to your question about my autumn leave
I can tell you that I can take it tomorrow or the
next day.

I'm hoping confidently to see our hometown again
soon.

With cordial greetings and ???????
Your Joseph ???

Best regards
Torsten

Hi trickcyclist,

(Lt.)Col. Tassilo Cordier von Löwenhaupt (aka von Cordier) commanded the 1st Regiment of the famous Kaiserjäger from Tyrol from July 1917 till November 1918.

(due to some technical devilry the links don't work directly, copy/paste the URL into the address field of your browser)

Picture of him for comparison here

Google also found me a Hauptmann Ludwig Riccabona in the Kaiserjäger.

I'm sure the experts in the Austro-Hungarian section of the forum can tell you a bit more about them.

Best regards
Torsten
