Letters

#1

Post by chris bell 59 » 24 Dec 2016, 09:16

Looking around a charity shop, I found a letter written by a member of the German armed forces, presumably to his family.
However,I cannot read the old German script and am hoping someone else can. Also there is a photograph of the battlefield grave of a German soldier.
Anyone help? Thanks.

This is what I decipher. It seems to be the first page only.

Ungarn am 15. November 44
Meine geliebte Käthe.
Nun meine Gute will ich Dir sofort nach meiner
Ankunft hier ein Brieflein zukommen lassen. Eines meine
lb.
Stunden ausgehen, Essen und Trinken was man be-
gehrte. Hier ist ja alles wieder vorüber. Haben auch schon
sehr schlechtes Wetter, fürchterlich Dreck genau wie in Rußland.
Nun meine Liebste will nur sehen, wo man wohl
noch überall hinwandern muß. Was meinst meine lb.
Was meinst
meine lb.

My beloved Käthe.
Now my dear I will send you a little letter right away
after my arrival here. I will say one thing, dear Käthe,
that we got from heaven to hell.
How delightful would it have been, however, in Slovakia.
There, one certainly felt like a human being again.
Was able to go out for a couple of hours in the evening.
Eat and drink whatever one desired.
Here everything is gone again.
Also have very bad weather already, horrible filth just like in Russia.
Now my dear I will have to see, where else one has to move to yet.
What do you think my dear Käthe, one ought to pray day and night
in order to reach an end of the war.
How likely will one survive this winter again.
Hopefully, my beloved, one will be lucky, that the
spring sun will shine again for us.
What do you think, my dear Käthe, a joy is nowhere to be
found anymore. Look, my dearest,
how happy would we be, and how beautiful would it be,
if we could spend our hours togehter.
How ever so often I remember indeed,
when will this day come when we, my beloved,
will be able to join hands forever to a faithful matrimony.
Always one gives thoughts, when will we ….

Many thanks indeed for your very kind help. My German language skills are from my school days almost 50 years ago and obviously my Sutterlin skill is zero.
You are correct about only 1 page- for some reason the 2nd page wouldn't upload, but I will try again today and see if I have better luck.
Glucklich Weihnachtstag und eine Frohliches neuesjahre (?)
