Second hint: In the complete and uncropped photo, he is speaking with the bespectacled commander of "Wiking".

Apparently this is a tougher nut to crack than I'd thought.

Another hint:

25.11.1944 [Received] Besondere Anerkennungsurkunde des Führers as SS-Obersturmbannführer and Kdr. SS-Panzer-Artillerie-Regiment 5 / 5.SS-Panzer-Division "Wiking" / IV.SS-Panzer-Korps (Cover page of award recommendation, dated 13.11.1944 and signed by Div. Fhr. Karl Ullrich [approved 18.11.1944 by Korps Kom. Gen. Herbert Otto Gille], suggests he was originally recommended for this award and the Ehrenblatt-Spange des Heeres; "Anerkennungsurkunde des Führers" is lined out, leaving only the Ehrenblatt-Spange dees Heeres, however on the bottom of the page is the handwritten notation "Anerk. Urkunde: 25.12.44")

Sorry, Georges. Not quite as highly decorated, but rose to higher rank than Otto Gieseke.

Sorry, no. Older than Schuldt, and served in World War I. Bavarian.
