Yes, I'd like some more information on this man. According to French MacLean (The Camp Men) he was at Dachau in 1937 and Majdanek in 1943, but what were his duties? Others have suggested that he was also at Buchenwald, but in what capacity? MacLean states that he was wounded in 1941, which would suggest a posting at the Front with a Waffen-SS unit. Can anybody throw any light on this? Thanks in advance.

Does anyone have any info on his service in the Waffen SS and in late 1944. I can't seem to find much, other than his KZ service.
Thanks!

Hello all,

About Herbert Rautenberg, I have some info that doesn´t match. According to some sources he was listed as officer of the SS-T.V. Brandenburg (Oranienburg/Sachsenhausen) between 1938-1940, but then I have found info and docs that places him in the SS-T.-Ers.Btl Breslau 8 Kp. and Kpfhr.
Also I have difficulties with his service in SS-T.V. Thüringen when that Standarte was éstablished with the KL Buchenwald 1937, but sources (here) claims that he started his service there in 1936. Is it a misstake between SS-Wachbtl Sachsen which later became the body for the later SS.T.V. Thüringen?

According to many sources Rautenberg was the Lagerführer of the Aussenlager Drütte (KL Neuengamme) between 1943 and 1944 he was then placed int he KL Neuengammes Kommendantur until 1945 but the SS-Führerliste from NA places him in KL Buchenwald in 1945, so there are som sources that doesn´t match, anyone who can spread some light on this matter?

And at last, does anyone known when he died and where?

Best regards
Georg

Hi all,

we are relatives (daughter and grandson) of Herbert Rautenberg and have read the information posted here with interest. It is far more detailed than what we knew about him. As to his whereabouts we know that following a recreational vacation in spring 1945 (probably March / April) in Bavaria he was ordered to Northern Germany for an unknown command / post. He has been missing since and his wife / our mother / grandmother declared him as deceased in 1949. A search for his whereabouts or fate via the Red Cross initiated in early 2000 did not bring any results. We would be grateful for any further information that you may have. Also we have original copies of the photos posted and would be interested to learn where from the respective poster obtained it.

Thank you and Best Regards

Josepha
