Hello all,

Does anyone have any biographical info on Dr. Karl Steinbacher, Chief of the SD Leitabschnitt Danzig? DOB, DOD and any other assignments beyond being Leiter in Danzig from 1942-1945? Any other info would be greatly appreciated!

Hello Albert,

Some trouble with your mention of EK 16

EK 16 created in Danzig was headed by Rudolf Tröger in 1939.
EK 16 (Knin) was part of EG Kroatien headed by Korndorfer (43) then Fest (43 - 45)

Hello Georges!

Information from Polish sources.

You can look at the book J.Banach (Banach, Jens: Die Inspekteure der Sicherheitspolizei und des SD 1936-1945. Hamburg 1985 and Banach, Jens: Heydrichs Vertreter im Feld: die Inspekteure, Kommandeure und Befehlshaber der Sicherheitspolizei. 2000).

I've the 2 books you mention and did'nt saw mention of SD Darmstadt :( . Banach is really excellent. I'm the proud owner of his thesis of IdS basis for his book "Heydrichs Elite".

I have to check for EK 16. the referenced Einsatzgruppen in Polen (Mallmann/Bohler/Matthäus don't mention it in staff EK 16 (?) as well The Field men by French Mc Lean who list all EG officers.

Source - it works the Polish Commission - GKBZHwP (Biuletyn Głowneij Komisji Badania Zbrodni Hitlerowskich w Polsce).
Perhaps this is the book 15 or 23.

All the info I have on Esk 16 lists Troger as commander. While French MacLean's Field Men is pretty comprehensive there are some omissions like Paul Schultz, Johannes Rentsch, etc.

Hello Georges,

Neither Mallmann/Bohler/Matthäus nor MacLean did not mentioned all officers who served in Einstzagruppen. MacLean omitted a lot of men who served in Einsatzgruppen in Poland 1939. He mentioned all commanders but only few lower ranked.

Hallo,

Steinbacher war von Mai 1945 bis Juni 1948 im Amerikanischen Internierungslager Darmstadt inhaftiert.
Staatsanwaltschaftliche Ermittlungen in den Jahren 1949 und 1956 wurden eingestellt.
