In a decoded radio message transmitted 5 Feb 1943 (GPDD 380d), SS Div "Wiking" reported to SS FHA a number of "gefallen" men of the Div; the following officers are mentioned:

"SS Hauptsturmführer Leopold KROCZA ist an 21.1.43 in Budjennowo, nördlich Ssalsk gefallen (Herzschuss)"; listed his parent's address in Neuburg bei Wien.

"SCHULZE, August, SS Untersturmführer, geboren 26.11.19 In Osterbruch, gefallen am 28.1.43, SS Inf.Regt. 'Germania'," and listed his parent's address in Osterbruch/Krs Gandersheim.

"WEBER, Alfred, SS Obersturmführer, geboren 7.6.06 in Eisleben, gefallen am 25.1.43, III/SS Flak.abt. 5" and listing his wife in Solingen/Ried.

Steve,

Thanks for posting the content of that decoded message. I was checking my records of these men against the data from the intercept and I found in every case the death listed on a period document, such as a Verlustmedung, was one day later. Most interesting was the case of August Schulze. There were two documents in Schulze's Personalakte that give the date of death as 28.1.1943 matching the date on the intercept and two other documents that give 29.1.1943 as can be seen on the Verlustmeldung below. While each of the three men listed on the intercept were members of the "Wiking" Division, the same problem with differing dates of death can be found in reports from other divisions and on the Western Front during 1944-45 as well. It's anyone's guess which date is "correct", but I have always believed that KIA dates from Kriegstagbuchs had the greatest likelihood of being accurate. Anyone one else have an opinion about these date inconsistencies?

John
