Erasmus Freiherr von Malsen-Ponickau

#1

Post by Sully7 » 03 Jun 2006, 03:19

Going through some old files my father-in-law brought back from WW-2, I found three documents dated (1936, 1940, 1943) that appear to be orginals. Two are signed by Himmler and one by Hitler. All three are concerning Johann-Erasmus Freiherr von Malsen-Ponickau. I can't read German but these documents seem to be appointing this man to something. I am working on getting them translated but in the mean time does anyone have any information on this man?

He was my grandfather and active in the war as SS-Bridargeführer having joined the SS very early in the third Reich. Would be very interested in the contents of the docs you are referring to and how they got to you? I am trying to find out more about him. He was sentenced under the Nuernberger trials to death due to membership of a criminal organisation SS and delivered to the Poles, who spared his life and gave him 10 years prison. He died in 1956 shortly after his return to Germany.

Hello and welcome to the forum.
If you carry out a search, using the facility above, you will discover some information about your grandfather. There has been some discussion recently over his awards and decorations and you may be able to throw some light on the matter. However, I think you are mistaken in your belief that he was sentenced to death in Nuremberg for membership of the SS. There is no such record of this sentence in the archives.
Best regards,
Max.

I'm afraid I don't. He was probably released in 1955 under the general amnesty. David Thompson might be able to help you...PM him.

HM.
Thanks. I believe we are looking for more details of the indictment, trial and sentence, but your input is most welcome.
Here's Malsen-Ponickau between Himmler and Prützmann.

This is not Erasmus von Malsen-Ponickau. I think it is his brother.

This is Freiherr von Malsen-Ponickau, Landesführer des Landesverbandes Bayern des „Stahlhelm“, later (25.04.1934) SA-Standartenführer.

Andreas,
What was his first name and was he the brother of Erasmus? If not, what relationship were the two men?
Regards,
Max.

Thank you Max, for putting me straight on the ID of the portrait. Would the brother's name be Lambert, Freiherr von Malsen-Ponickau, or is Lambert yet another branch of the family.

Best regards,

VJK
