SS-Stubaf. Schneeberger (West Prussia 1945) - info needed

#1

Post by beaviso » 04 Aug 2006, 00:15

Hi,

I'm looking for biographical info on SS-Stubaf. Schneeberger (first name unknown) which could have commanded a SS penal battalion near Danzig (West Prussia) in February/March 1945.
I presume he was a commander of one of three battalions which formed the SS-Regiment commanded by Hans-Heinrich Kaltofen. This particular regiment is described as "bewahrungs" - that means penal unit, which degraded and court-martialled SS officers and soldiers served in. I don't think the whole regiment was "bewahrungs", but it seems that one of its battalions (Schneeberger) consisted of convicts from the Danzig-Matzkau lager.

TIA for any suitable info.

Brgds,
Michal

Thanks Paul.
Did Schneeberger survive the war or did he become KIA or MIA?

And a couple of other questions by the way:
1. Who was in charge of the Danzig-Matzkau penal lager for convicted members of SS?
2. Do you have any info on the Police unit which fought near Danzig in 1945 - the SS-Polizei Regiment "Beck" (and Beck himself)?

Kind regards,
Michal

Hi Mike,

do you mean the "Sozialverband VdK Deutschland"? If you do, please tell me how to research missed persons. I didn't find it out on the webside.

Thanks!

Just klick on "Gräbersuche" ,

http://www.volksbund.de/graebersuche/

then on "Onlinesuche" ,

http://www.volksbund.de/graebersuche/content_suche.asp ,

then you fill in the name and the data you have regarding the requested person . To get a match you have to enter your personal data ( by the way , everybody should think about a membership in this very usefull society , it costs just a few Euronen per year , and they need ( and deserve ) it ! ) .

Now, that's quite interesting!
I've recently read some unit bio, and the author says Schneeberger led his unit during the battle for village "X". And I know that the battle for "X" took place around 10.03.1945. (more-less 1 day), so there is no possibility that Schneeberger got killed or went missed ten days earlier, as the VDK-website says... Another mystery, as usual.

Hey Ludger,

Well, Jan-Hendrik beat me to it, his explaination is precisly what I wanted to say as well.
This site is a handy tool if you're looking for something, although don't think that you'll
find every officer on it.

But you can always try, even with only Schneeberger it probably would have worked.
And as far as I know VDK stands for Volksbund Deutscher Kriegsgräber.

And to Michal I would say, the DoD from Schneeberger is maybe not totally correct, there are mistakes on the VDK-website. Maybe somebody who has the Führerliste can check what John has to tell us about the DoD from Schneeberger.

Greetings folks,
Mike

As we know VDK is accurate to the best information available to them for men with graves in war cemeteries (or on some major memorials).

John's Fuhrerliste says

Schneeberger, Paul
SS-Stubaf.
Born 10 Jul 1913 Fürth/Bayern

SS # 124 533

Hstuf. 6.SS-Geb.Div. in Mar 42
Hstuf. Pz.GR.19 in Sep 43
Hstuf. Chef,12./Pz.GR.6 in Mar 44
Hstuf. Kdr.II./Pz.GR.6 in Apr 44
Stubaf. SS-Pz.Gr.Sch.Westpr. in Jan 45
Subaf Kdr.I./Rgt.Kaltofen in Mar 45

Missing March 1945 Danzig

And a vote of thanks to John for the mind boggling number of hours he must have spent producing the Fuhrer liste so that I could spend 2 minutes to get all that information. SUPERB.

Stubaf. SS-Pz.Gr.Sch.Westpr. in Jan 45
Thats leads me to another question as I do not know a SS-PzGrenSchule in Westpreußen , just a "SS- und Waffen-Unterführerschule SS-TrÜbPl.”Westpreußen” in Reckow bei Bütow " , see :

http://www.lexikon-der-wehrmacht.de/Kar ... ssen-R.htm

Who can clear this ??

I have seen multiple period documents with the text "SS-Panzergrenadierschule Westpreußen". This school is also mentioned in Kleitmann's book, "Die Waffen-SS eine Dokumentation" as can be seen below. Just like the other Panzergrenadier school at the Beneschau training area was referred to as both Kienschlag and Prosetschnitz, Sophienwalde is also seen in use with Westpreußen.

@Iltis
Thank you for bringing the full bio of Paul Schneeberger to light. I'm especially glad that my presumption about his participation in SS-Regiment "Kaltofen" has been confirmed!

@Jan-Hendrik
TrUebPltz "Westpreußen" = Sophienwalde near Bruß, north of Könitz (Chojnice)
