Hello Jérôme,

It looks like he's one and the same. Because I was really looking for a Jakob Ottinger I didn't look elsewhere, stupid me. I also have Jakob Oettinger in my files and this is what I had written down about him:
Jakob Oettinger.
Born on 26-8-1912 in Nürnberg.
Member SS(nr. 6.807).
SS-Hauptsturmführer.
In 1943 he served with the Estnische SS-Legion.
SS-Sturmbannführer.
In 1945 he was the last commander from SS-Panzer-Grenadier-Ausbildungs- und Ersatz-Bataillon 2 within 2. SS-Panzer-Division ‘Das Reich’.

So yes, Jakob Ottinger has to be Jakob Oettinger, that's for sure.
Thanks for pointing me in the right direction, it's much appreciated.

Greetings,
Mike

One of the duty-oldest SS-comrade, Jakob Oettinger, died recently on the 3rd of November 2007 aged 95. He had joined the Nuremberg Allgemeine SS in 1929. His honour was loyalty!

I just joined this forum and ran across this message thread...unfortunately it isn't current but I thought I'd take a chance and reply.
I am a good friend of Jakob Oettinger's son and his son's wife. Great folks and have been very open to me in discussing his father. He is very closed mouthed about Jakob because he was in the SS. But fromwhat he has shared, he was a man simply fighting for his country.
I have borrowed Jakob's Deutschland regimental history book which is obviously in German...his son has translated some of it for me.
He also showed me Jakob's Iron Cross first class, his Wound Badge in black and his Ostfront medal toname a few.
He toldof the time Deutschland was posted in Czechoslovakia and the family was along. His son tells of participating in live fire drills and live grenade drills as a young kid! The SS landsers weren't allthat thrilled but they were the boss' kids afterall!
Jakob did indeed pass away but I think the date listed here is incorrect...I will askhis son tomorrow.

Hope this helps and maybe revisits this man's time with Deutschland

Hello JKlein,

Welcome to this forum and yes, please do let us know if the DoD is correct or not.
And when you're able to find out the place of death that would be fine as well.

You're mentioning some of his awards, do you know of any more???

Mike:

St. Jakob Oettinger did indeed die in 2007. His was buried in Nuremberg.
As far as his unit affiliations, he was with Deutschland regiment, second batallion, fifth company. Proof is a picture of the entire company in his unit history book... His son identified him. Also, in the listing of all who won the Iron Cross it indicated D, 2bat., 5kpy. He won the EC-1 while in Holland for capturing a small town with no casualties.
Later he was wounded in Russia for which he rcieved the Wound Badge in Black...upon recovery he was promoted to SS Major leading a Ersatz battalion in Prague, Cz. Jakob's son said there was a huge party with lots of booze consumed celebrating his promotion.
