Hi pcfl, which picture are you talking about? There is a series of 3 pictures showing men sitting around a table on the outside and drinking and those pictures were taken around September 1, 1944. They show Dr. Enno Lolling and other doctors socialising after a visit to a coal mine. Do you mean one of those? We opened a separate thread concerning these pictures and it is called "who are the physicians?". Maybe you can look this up and point out who you are thinking of...

Another English web page just shows Thumann as "Anton Thumann who also served at Dachau, Majdanek, Auschwitz and Neuengamme" at this link http://www.holocaustresearchproject.org ... rosen.html.
Given Thumann's previous assignments and experience with mass exterminations (Aktion Erntedankfest - Operation Harvest Festival) and his nickname "Executioner of Majdanek" I would assume he was in fact at Auschwitz-Birkenau. But I have not found a staff list that explicitly puts him there.
Unfortunately a lot of references to that era do not differentiate between Auschwitz I and Auschwitz-Birkenau (Auschwitz II)
