This man is identical with the SS leader in Budapest, isn't he?

Hey Phil,

Thanks for the info on Clages, that should be him for sure...

And yes, with Gerke I also thought of Ernst Gerke but since nothing in his bio refers to a post in Tilsit I wasn't sure he could be it....But since you don't find any other Gerke I presume he's the one I'm searching for....

And Grisu, I don't know if Clages was SS-leader in Budapest, can't tell you at all....

Mikedc, here's some additional biographical information on Gerhard Clages: Born in Hamburg, engineer in the Handeslmarine, joined NSDAP in 1931, SS in 1934, SD in 1936, Kriminalkommisar in Prague, then Gestapo/SD in Budapest, died in October 1944, promoted to Stumbannführer posthumously.

For more info see: Shlomo Aronson Hitler, the Allies and the Jews (OUP 2004). Some basic biographical information also in Yehuda Bauer Jews for Sale? (Yale UP 1994).

Clages was also the commander of the 1941 destruction and annihilation of the Czech village of Ležáky as 'retaliation' for Heydrich's assassination.

There may be more info on Clages on the internet. Maybe one of our Czech contributors can translate the key passages on Clages of these sites (I will post them in the the sound barrier section):
http://forum.valka.cz/viewtopic.php/p/97634#97634
http://www.kpp.iipardubice.cz/111524042 ... hiady.html

Hope this helps

Gerhard Clages 26.06.1902 in Braunschweig SS-Sturmbannführer chief of the stapo in Pardubice; 1944 chief of the SD in Budapest (Judendeportation) died 15.10.1944 in Hungary

Thanks guys, for the extra info on Clages and Krumbach...

But, Grisu tells us that Clages was born in Hamburg and ansata tells us that he was born in Braunschweig. It's a minor detail I know but since these are not the same locations I hope somebody can tell us what the correct place of birth was.....
Because I can't tell which of these sources has the correct place of birth mentioned.

And does somebody know in which period he was Gestapo-chief in Pardubice???
