SS Einsatz. Alfred Putz
SS Einsatz. Alfred Putz
I recently read Daniel Bar-On's "The Legacy of Silence" and the "The Hitler Virus" (I forgot the author's name) - two books which mention the daughter of this rather obscure SS leader, Alfred Putz, leader of SS Radom and an Einsatzgruppen. The daughter turned out OK despite her father...she remembers him well but the man committed suicide at the war's end. He has a brief mention in Reitlinger's "Final Solution" but like Gerhard Maurer, he is not mentioned in almost all the Holocaust books I've looked in. I can't find a photo of him anywhere either. It's sad that he left his poor family such a rotten memory and a pale of tears...all because he fell head over heels for the Nazi ideology and committed atrocious acts in it's name. If anyone has any info. on this obscure figure i'd appreciate it. It will shed more light on what I read concerning his daughter. She remembered her father as a loving man, yet he was a Nazi in all respects and strictly adhered to the racial doctrine. He became a murderer. This kind of schizophrenia on the part of these SS men is the strangest thing to comprehend psychologically - the reconciliation of loving fathers with the mass murderers who kill women and children before open graves. I guess this paradox is exactly what Himmler referred to in his speech at Posen in 1943..."To have stuck it out and apart from ordinary human weakness to have remained decent men, this is what has made us hard"...not an exact quote but I don't have it in front of me. Thanks all. (Duncan).

Re: SS Einsatz. Alfred Putz
Yes you are correct!! Thankyou so much for correcting that....his name was indeed KARL Putz (NOT Alfred). I unfortunately mixed-up his name. No wonder I'm not getting any feedback on him! Reitlinger refers to him as "SS Major Putz", so wouldn't that translate to "Obersturmbannfuhrer"? anyway, it's him ...KARL PUTZ.

Thanks for the information. Hopefully someone will find a photo but I don't think they will...he is a very obscure and not well-known SS Leader.
Re: SS Einsatz. Alfred Putz
Thanks George for posting the link for the photo. So that was Karl Pütz. He looks rather common, but then they all did when not in uniform. Thanks again.
Re: SS Einsatz. Alfred Putz
Putz's daughter had a rough start in life. She became obsessed with her father and finding out more about him since she was only 4 when he comitted suicide. She only remembers him as a sweet and adoring father. Her mother told her she had arguments with Karl because he was so unrelenting and fanatical about enforcing Nazi policy - he was a "true believer" in the ideology of National Socialism, including it's racist creed. They had a neighbor who was Jewish and the children played together. The family then disappeared and her mother was very angry about it. Karl was totally adamant that such measures were necessary and approved of the action. This attitude created much tension between her parents. The daughter reports that Putz shot himself in the head. He could not live in a world without his "God" - Hitler. He was a lawyer by profession and his law school friends remembered him as a shy and rather passive individual..someone who was quite helpful to others..a good man. After the war, the daughter grew up in much poverty and hardship. She later became a "hippie", experimented with LSD and drugs, and had a "spiritual awakening" of sorts in the late 1960's. She got married and had 4 children, one of which was born with Down's Syndrome. She knew her father believed that such handicapped people should be exterminated. This haunted her. She later met with Jewish holocaust survivors and found healing and peace through this kind of activity and also through the help of a psychiatrist. She felt her father was a "faustian", a split personality. She also became a believer in the theory of "doubling" put forward by Robert Jay Lifton in his book "The Nazi Doctors". A remarkable story. “Adding special characters ”.
This is to avoid confusion with the right spelling Putz or Pützjust click on the omega-icon (Ω) above the edit area and you will get an selection screen where you can easily select the character to include. This function is for example useful for the German characters ü and β.
