In another thread on the forum it is mentioned that Batz was appointed Leiter, Stapoleitstelle Hannover, on 1 June 1940.

Between Bast and Spann there may have been a deputy in charge, maybe the newly promoted to KD, SS-Stubaf Ernst Berger, who was possibly the Vertreter des Leiter at the time. Even more speculation: Spann was Stapoleiter Saarbrücken when posted to Linz. At the end of March into April 1944 whilst at Saarbrücken he was embroiled in the killing of the RAF officer escapers from Sagan. Because of Berlin's need to have all those Gestapo locations involved in the killing all have similar stories (the officers tried to escape after being arrested etc.) there was undoubtedly a lot of meetings in Berlin before they all got their stories straight and acceptable by Berlin. These machinations may have resulted in the delay of his arrival in Linz.

Spann was killed in a huge Allied air-raid on Linz during the late morning of 25 April 1945 that destroyed large parts of the city. According to his death certificate, cause of death was "Schadel- und Knochenbrüche". The Stapostelle never recovered before US ground forces occupied the area. Incidentally, another victim of this air-raid was Achamer Pifrader.

Forgot to add:

Are you sure Achamer Pifrader with Stapostelle Linz? Another thread on the forum has him as Stapoleiter Wien between 1938 and March 1939. Might have been down-market for him to then go to a lesser Stapostelle at Linz.

BBL 4/1940 (sic) names SS-Stubaf RR Leitsmann as the new Stapoleiter Linz, and SS-Ostubaf ORR Achamer Pifrader as the new Stapoleiter Düsseldorf.

Hi Steve
Data comes from a bio of Dr Gerhard Bast written by his son and this is why I asked

On April 1, 1940 Achamer-Pifrader was Stapoleiter DARMSTADT, and Stapoleiter Linz was Leitsmann.

According to my informations, SS-Oberführer und Oberst der Polizei, Regierungs und Kriminaldirektor Dr. Humbert ACHAMER-PIFRADER (Gruppenleiter B und Leiter der Referat B1 [West und Nordgebiete] in Amtsgruppe IV (GESTAPO) der RSHA) and SS-Obersturmbannführer und Oberregierungsrat Dr. Leopold SPANN were both killed along with 50 other GESTAPO officers and workers when a heavy Allied bomb hit the Kolpinghaus on Langgasse 13.
This single bomb wiped out the entire GESTAPO staff and office in Linz!

This is from an intercepted German radio message decrypted by Bletchley Park:
26 April 1945, radio message to RFSS and Chef Orpo, Berlin, from KdGend Oberdonau: “Am 25.04.45 von 11.12 Uhr bis 14.13 Uhr, Luftangriff auf Reichsgau Oberdonau, 650 bis 700 Flugzeuge in 27 Wellen. Schwerpunkt Bahnhof Linz und wels. Bordwaffenangriff im Gaubereich festgestellt. Beim Angriff auf Linz, SS u Pol. Fhr. Oberdonau, SS-Of. Dr. Piffrader (sic) und Leiter d. Stapo Linz, SS-Ostubaf. Dr. Spann, gefallen.”

Pifrader noted in a previously unknown position.
