By the way, SS-Sturmbannführer Karl-Heinz KEITEL, the commander of the 17.SS-Kavallerie Regiment was wounded on 12 XII 1944 then flown out of the cauldron of Budapest. Who took command of the unit after him?

Re: Siege of Budapest German units commanders
Bruno Meiert was only a temporary commander of SS-Kav.Rgt. 17. A few days later he was replaced by an Ostubaf. who signed his German Cross in Gold recommendation. The signature was posted in this forum by Mark Yerger some time ago, but nobody identified it. A challenge for experts! This is the document from John Moore's excellent Führeliste.

Re: Siege of Budapest German units commanders
Dear Ignacio,
in the BA-MA N 756 files, I found a report of a former lieutenant colonel of the German Air Force, Oberstleutnant der Luftwaffe Werner Siegfried, who stated after the war, that after he was transferred to the Waffen-SS as SS-Obersturmbannführer with effect from September 30th 1944, he was send to the 8th SS-Kav.Div as a regimental leader by the SS-FHA.
At Budapest, without any date giving, he stated that he was used as a regimental leader in the 22th SS-Kav.Div.!!
Later he got the order to reform the SS-Kav.Rgt 53 in the Kisber – Babolna area, his regimental Adjutant was a SS- O-/Hstuf. Nemitzer than!
I was not able to check this information because of the lack of information regarding the 22.SS-Frw.Kav.Div. and the command rooster of this division, but I could not help myself, the signing in this document looks like the last name of the former Oberstleutnant der Luftwaffe, “Siegfried”??!!
Regarding the regimental leaders of the police regiments in the Budapast area,
I can confirm the Oberstleutnant der Schutzpolizei Ernst Weis as commander of the new formed SS-Pol.Rgt 8.
The information, that the SS-Ostubaf. Fritz Grandke was commander of the new formed SS-Pol.Rgt 1 is wrong, from Mehner, Waffen-SS and Orpo, page 323, DAL SS 1.10.1944, Nr. 988, stated: Grandke was born 2.9.04, SS-Nr. 323 895, NSDAP 5 681 746, Ostubaf. 30.1.44, Kdr. Nachschub 9.SS-Pz.Div. H
On October 20th 1944, the command rooster of the three regiments looked like this
SS-Polizei-Regiment 1
Kommandeur: Oberstleutnant Helwes Budapest
I. Bataillon (bisher II./SS-Pol. 12), Major Giebe Budapest
II. Bataillon, Hauptmann Järke Barcs
III. Bataillon, Hauptmann Oerke Budapest
Nachr.Zug, 12.verst.Pol.Pz.Kp., 1.Gesch.Bttr.
SS-Polizei-Regiment 6 (bespannt) (in Aufstellung)
Kommandeur: Oberstleutnant Mailwald Barcs
I. Bataillon (bisher II./SS-Pol 20), Major Tillmann Barcs
II. Bataillon (bisher III./ SS-Pol. 21), Hauptmann Kraiker Kaposvar
III. Bataillon, Major Sabatka Barcs
IV. Bataillon, Major Lonz Barcs
Nachr.Zug, Gesch.Bttr
SS-Polizei-Regiment 8 (bespannt) (in Aufstellung)
Kommandeur: Oberstleutnant Weis Dunavöldar
I. Bataillon, Major Lüer Dunavöldar
II. Bataillon, Hauptmann Mehring Dunavöldar
III. Bataillon, Hauptmann Brendel Dunavöldar
IV. Bataillon, Hauptmann Eicker Dunavöldar
Nachr.Zug.
(BA Berlin R 19 451/66)
I couldn´t confirm my thoughts right now, but I think, that the SS-Standartenführer and Oberst of the Schutzpolizei Helmut Dörner was transferred from the 4th SS-Pol.Pz.Gren.Div. to the BdO Budapest as leader or commander of the SS-Pol.Rgt 1 in the city! But I don´t know, what happened to Oberstleutnant Helwes (maybe wounded?)
Dörner was only mentioned as “Battle group commander” in Budapest and I wasn´t able to find any hint, that he took over the SS-Pol.Rgt 1 there, but I haven´t any other position for him in the area of the BdO Budapest in this time periode??
Maybe someone else would be able to add some more information?
With all the best yours Roland

Dear Roland
Thank you for the information regarding Werner Siegfried. I think that Kurt Bratsch led SS-Kav.Rgt. 53 to the end (Kisber-Bab. is where the regiment began trainning in October 1944). Per your own March 2007 post in the Forum der Wehrmacht (thread Zur Geschichte der SS-Kav.Schule in Göttingen), in February or March 1945 Siegfried reached Beneschau, so it seems he survived the Budapest siege somehow.
Regards
Ignacio
