SS ID for surrendering SS Officer

#1

Post by Bcc335 » 17 Sep 2009, 10:40

Can anyone Identify the SS Officer (Sturmbannführer) surrendering in this color film on or about May 8

http://resources.ushmm.org/film/display ... e_num=3306

Go to bottom of page, advance quick links on bottom to far left and click on small shot labeled 01:51:05:23

Best viewed on slow motion and full screen in WMP by right clcking middle of clip once started and selecting these options.

This appears to be an SS Sturmbannführer surrendering to Americans in Czechoslovakia near Rokycany,CZ

Does anyone recognize the Waffen SS Officer? SS Sturmbannführer? Unit title? Cuff bands?

Tks

How about using the forum member helping forum member function!

and,

1. provide a keyword for this already existing very long thread discussing this surrending Officer or
2. post the link to the thread

regards

The main thread in question is http://forum.axishistory.com/viewtopic. ... &start=240, a sticky on the 'Women in the Reich' section. It discusses the colour film in detail and has some excellent detective work as to when/where etc.

I would suggest Rokycany as a keyword might have been a good starting point for a search.

Cheers.

Ah Yes! The "Lost German Girl" thread" located in the "Women of the Reich" section.
Yes, There is some excellent work in that thread!

As a contributor to the thread I thought it might be a good idea to post here in the "SS & Polizei" section concerning the Identity of the "SS Officer" in the film link posted above.

There is some excellent detective work here also and some very knowledgeable SS & Polizei devotees.
I thought I would post here in the hopes that one of these individuals might recognize the SS Officer or perhaps the unit. :)

Search keywords used prior to posting in "SS & Polizei" section: Strumbannfuhrer, Surrendering Officer, etc... :)

regards :D

He looks a lot like Willi Fortenbacher. The rank does not match but SS Nord was decimated at Oder, maybe with no unit to command he went to Sturmbannfuhrer. There does not appear to be any information about him after March 1945 except that he lived until 1980s

An officer could be downgraded if he was sacked but not because his unit did not exist anymore ! This officer is not SS-Standartenführer Willi Fortenbacher, that's for sure.

Isn't he also seen in color footage waving while leaving in a car?

According to this page ( http://stabswache-de-euros.blogspot.com ... -of-2.html ), it's SS-Obersturmbannführer Otto Weidinger. But why he didn't put his Ritterkreuz on?

Or his German Cross, or Close Combat Clasp. Possibly to look less high-profile during his encounter with his soon-to-be captors. But why did he let himself go during those final weeks of the Reich, exchanging his normal features for those of a puffy operette officer.

Maybe you have a better candidate for the ID, Harro?
