Where this place?
May be SS-Übungslager Dachau - KL Dachau? (source: WAF)

Several camps had these direction signs. I've seen this particular one before in a book photo. I'll have a search through some books.

Here's one at Dachau.
Good shot of Hess' bald patch and Himmler's cap!

Many thanks Max!

Dachau was not only an important Konzentrations-Lager but also a large SS-complex area which included (between others) :

depending SS-Hauptamt :

- SS-Übungslager Dachau (Training lager for SS )
- SS-Standortkommandantur der Waffen-SS (Garrison Command)

depending WVHA

- Hauptwirtschaftslager der Waffen-SS München-Dachau

Georges,
That was also the case at Weimar-Buchenwald, Oranienburg-Sachsenhausen, Auschwitz, etc.

Ostmann,
Your particular sign was situated at Dachau.

Derek,
I know I've seen this sign in a book, but I cannot for the life of me find it. I remember it for the cello on the old man's back. Do you know which book it's in?
Thanks,
Max.

I agree with you for SS network around a number of KL but for the mention "SS-Ubungslager", this structure was unique and cited in many documents of the SS-Hauptamt.

Georges,
I know. I was referring to your phrase "....a large SS complex area...." not the SS-Übungslager.

Great photos Andrey and Max I've never seen these before.

I notice the ornate columns (eyelets) and top seem to be the same / similar design on "11-328.jpg " from Dachau and "KL Bu sign.jpg" from Buchenwald, although one is taller than the other. The top figurines differ slightly but clearly point the way to go within the complex surrounding the camp, i.e. SS-Übungslager in Dachau and SS- Kasernen in Buchenwald.

Was this a standard design of column that was used elsewhere? and are there any photos of a similar column from other camps?

Just another quick question was SS-(Truppen?)Übungslager Dachau always called this? As Iv'e also seen it referred to as SS-Ausbildungslager Dachau.

Regards
Brian

Max,
Try as I might I can't think of the sign being used as an illustration in a book, but I do remember that very nice picture of Walter Krueger reviewing troops that you bought off ebay. It shows one of the parade grounds in the Uebungslager complex.
I'll continue to check my books.
