He was bodyguard from Hitler. This is him on the left, see photo. I have the change
to buy many more photos from him.

He deserted to the americans or captured?

"Geheim!
Fluechtig ist: Sturmbannfuehrer Schuster, Herbert, frueher Kommandeur der Pz. Jg. Abt. der 17. SS-Pz. Gren. Div. entflohen am 18.10.44 Mittags aus Untersuchungshaft im Ham (10 Km. v. St. Avold).
Personalien: geb. 6.4.15, Wohnung Pforzheim.
Beschreibung: 1,80 gross, langschaedig, dunkles Haar, lange gerade Nase, starke Augenbraun, bekleidet mit Panzeruniform, Ledermantel, Feldmuetze ohne Kordel, EK roem. 1 Pz Sturmabzeichen, Verwundetenabzeichen in Silber, Zivilkleidung moeglich.
Um Einleitung einer Grossfahndung wird ersucht. Bei ergreifen Einliegerung in das naechste Wehrmachtsgefaengnis.
Erfolgsmeldung hier her Kripostellen don (sic) dort aus Verstaendigen."

Our late Phil did write his SS-Nr wrong it´s 103529 and he deserted and was kicked out from the SS on Nov 16 , 1944.

As an answer on another question, he was born on Pforzheim

Here is a document that states that. Interessting figure I must say.

Almost a decade since I posted on this topic and yet another strange bit of information from a (British) Foreign Office file:
"SS-Stubaf. Herbert Schuster served in France and on 21 Oct 1947 a French extradition request under consideration of the Extradition Panel at Herford; presently interned at 2 WCHC".

WCHC = War Criminals Holdings Centre and No. 2 was at Minden (British Zone)
