This translator in the German foreign ministry appeared in November 2, 1938 as an SS-Sturmbannführer, though he stated in his memoirs, that SS uniform was just borrowed to him in 1937, because Hitler didn´t like his appearance in civilian clothes among uniformed Nazi officials. Was it really possible to wear SS uniform without being member of the SS?

Re: Paul-Otto Schmidt
Hello,
Paul-Otto Schmidt was promoted to SS-Sturmbannfuhrer on May 2. 1938 according to the 1.12.38 SS-DAL so what he was wearing was in his official capacity as a SS-Sturmbannfuhrer at that time.
Best,
James

OK, thanks! Full SS member then, no borrowed uniform.
