This translator in the German foreign ministry appeared in November 2, 1938 as an SS-Sturmbannführer, though he stated in his memoirs, that SS uniform was just borrowed to him in 1937, because Hitler didn´t like his appearance in civilian clothes among uniformed Nazi officials. Was it really possible to wear SS uniform without being member of the SS?

Hello,

Paul-Otto Schmidt was promoted to SS-Sturmbannfuhrer on May 2. 1938 according to the 1.12.38 SS-DAL so what he was wearing was in his official capacity as a SS-Sturmbannfuhrer at that time.

He was born 23.6.1899 He did not join the Party until the war years Party Nr 8981252 Foreign Office rank Gesandter SS Nr 289260 SS Usf 25.9.37 Osf 9.11.37 Hsf 30.1.38 Sbf 2.5.38 Obsbf 10.9.39 Sf 9.11.40 Awarded IK 2 and Wound badge in black during WW1
