Before my Grandfather in-law died (last year 2009) he told the family he was SS. 10th Panzer Frundsberg division.
He was a Hauptscharführer, panther or tiger driver. He knew Sepp Dietrich very well.

We have no info on him. Apart from what he told us.
Berlin has his files but the service history and promotion information in them has been removed.

One of his brothers was Herbert Koch a Russian front soldier with many medals that we have.
His other brother was Walter Koch who worked in the office with Himmler. (Helmut thought that Walter had gone through the files and removed information on the Koch family)
His other brother Werner Koch we think went to U-boats
Finally Willi Koch was the oldest a foot soldier who died in battle.

Does anyone have any ideas on where I could go to get more information on Helmut. Would there be a list of tank units in the Frundsberg division with names of crew? Or could I cross reference to family members?

Any help would be great.

Cheers

Peter D

Thanks Jamie,

I have used Mike Constandy's services and he helped me get where I am now.
The WASt has information only on his mother, where he lived as a young teenager, when he was captured, and POW information.
But nothing on his service history, medals or rank.

My research has taken me a long way at this stage, he could have been a trainer with his rank for the 10th second battalion Frundsberg. Or he was possibly somehow attached to the 501st.
Either way he was captured in the Falaise pocket I believe.
His account was that he was the only one who survived his tank explosion. All crew died, and the turret came off.

I am interested in what you have "waffen-IDF" though my Helmut was born 21-11-1924 Neumunster. We do know that his files were tampered with.

cheers
Peter
