Hello Georges,

in addition to your post one can add that the book by Steegmann is also available in German, just came out I think. Just got it. As far as I know the most comprehensive and the only academic history of Natzweiler that has been published. 580 pages, 25 Euro. I think it is a must for people who want to know about Natzweiler.

Only little negative point especially for us here on this forum: Except for the camp commanders as mentioned above by Georges, not too many names of SS-personnel are mentioned in the book. That was not the intention obviously....

But again: perfect book on Natzweiler! Tilman

salut Danyb,

I agree with you but the "excellent and easy to read" book of Henri Allainmat cover essentially the life and death in main camp.
Steegmann cover widely the life and death and too the economic aspects of the KL Struthof Natzweiller : the thousands of inmates which provided slave labour to numerous german companies and alsacian one (under german control). Also a number of bio datas on cited SS members.
Allainmat forget to cite the last commander of the KL
Heinrich SCHWARZ
born on 16 june 1906 at Munchen
SS 19691 PN 786 871
1938 work for Hauptamt Haushalt und Bauten
1940 Arbeitdienstführer in KL Auschwitz
1941 october Schutzhaftlagerführer E
1942 april Arbeitsdienstführer KL Auschwitz then appointed to Monowitz (Auschwitz III) in november 1943
succeded to Hartjenstein when KL A was evacuated. S. arrived at Natzweiler on 18/02/1945. His main purpose was evacuation of Natzweiler and organisation of "death marschs)
Sentenced to death in 1947 at the trial of Rastatt and executed 20/03/1947

Hi Danyb,

according to http://urbes-alsace.fr/wp-content/uploa ... ndler..pdf must have been alive at least until 1962, when his case was closed in Stuttgart.

Regards Puck

Edit: Brendler died 2006 in Visselhövede https://www.stuttgarter-zeitung.de/inha ... d49a4.html
