SS-Stubaf. Otto Hansmann

#1

Post by Shane A Beaver » 02 Aug 2010, 16:37

I have some substantial information regarding the career of SS-Stubaf. Otto Hansmann, chiefly from the 1938 and 1944 DAL, John Moore's Führerliste, Otto Weidingers research on the Das Reich Division and others. However, there are some gaps in my research:

1) He commanded a reformed II./SS-IR "Deutschland" from 12.01.41, but that is the last I hear of him until 01.02.44, when he took command of SS-Kavallerie-Regt.16. There is a suggestion that he was assigned to one of the Junkerschulen in early 1942, but can anyone confirm this? Furthermore, what other appointments did he have between December 1941 and February 1944? Did he also succeed Zehender as commander of SS-Kav Regt.16?

2) In the 1944 DAL he is listed as moving to the 12th SS-Armee-Korps. Can anyone tell me what his role was with this higher formation, please?

3) He died in January 1953. Was this in Soviet captivity?

Any information will be gratefully received, thanks in advance.

Thanks Jan. That's answered a few questions, but there is still a large gap between 1942 and 1944. Furthermore, I have not come across any reference to him having served with any of the Totenkopf Regiments. However, after sending my original request, I suddenly remembered that I had a couple of photographs of Hansmann, courtesy of Richard Schulze-Kossens work on the Junkerschulen. Both show the 8th Standartenoberjunker Lehrgang at Bad Tölz in 1942, at which Hansmann was a tactics instructor.

Is it possible that we can update this post as well with your informantion Jan-Hendrik. I am not a member of your other forum. Also Shane, is it possible to see the photos your refer to either here or via PM.

My contribution to this thread is that Otto Hansmann served with SS-Unterfuhrerschule Arnhiem during the battle in Seot 1944. After the battle he did the assault on the Betuwe from Wageningen across the Rhine. For this acton he was recommended for the DKiG in Dec 194 by the XII SS Armee Corps. However the receommendation was not approved as there was not a record of multiple acts of bravery documented in the recommendation.

Cheers

Hello,
Very nice pic indeed in PAF. Only one in Weidinger Vol 3 with a helmeted Hansmann.

Mark Yerger in German Cross in Gold Nr 4 page 58 gives a biography of Otto Hansmann .
Quote
“After his recovery Hansmann went to Junkerschule Bad Tölz at the start of April 1942, serving as an instructor and then, from November 1, 1943 as a Lehrgruppenkommandeur. He remained there until taking his cavalry regiment command. While assigned to Bad Tölz Hansmann was sent to the SS Artillerie-Schule II from late January 1943 to late June of that year.”

He succeeded Hstuf Fritz Höhenberger temporary commander of the regiment 16 (after Waldemar Fegelein was wounded).

Hello,

Yerger always in his biography of Hansmann says that he led the Regimentsgruppe "Hansmann" of the division
"vonTettau " within the XII SS Armeekorps where he was assigned from August 25, 1944 to December 13,1944
and also of his recommendation for the GCiG that was not approved.

The file of Hansmann is not in "rejected proposals" CD Nr 7 of the Führerliste of John Moore, so I would be therefore interested to know what's there in his recommendation?

Above, Revellations speaks of the Unterführerschule Arnheim and I never read something about Hansmann with this school or attached Kampfgruppe.

Does someone have some information on this Regimentsgruppe "Hansmann"?

Patrick

Patrick,

You are quite correct. Rechecked my notes and the comments I have about Hansmann I had mistakenly placed under Unterfuhrerschule Armheim and it should have been under XII SS Corps. So ignore my post.

Hello,

The question of Shane on which assignment Hansmann was within the XII SS Armeekorps didn't yet have an answer.
Does Revellations have at hand the recommendation for German Cross in Gold of Hansmann or someone else and without post them could say if it's made mention of the unit Hansmann did belong to whithin the XII SS Armeekorps (Division Tettau von?)?

Hansmann is mentioned in the Dienstalterliste of March 1, 1945 as commander of the SS Freiw. Rgt 67.
I don't have a lot of material on the 27th SS Freiw. Gr. Div. "Langemarck."

I found this in the book of Richard Landwehr "Lions "Flanders edited 1983 by Bibliophile Legion Books page 180
Quote
"In the course of March1945, much of SS Rgt.68 was incorporated into the SS Regiments 66 and 67 and the regimental commander Stubaf. Hansmann, was transferred to another SS frontline unit."

Certainly a typo error for Rgt 68 instead of Rgt 67 because the command roster page 159 gives Hansmann as Kr Rgt 67.

Patrick,

The recommendation was made by the commander of the XII SS Armee Korps on the 17th October 1944 but in the statement it says that Regimental Gruppe 'Hansmann' on the 4th October 1944 under command of General v Tettau.......

That should clear it up.

Cheers

Scott

PS - please understand by unwillingness to post the recommendation up here as it was provided by John Moore's Fuhrerliste
