Identification - SS Wiking

#1

Post by spankeem » 02 Sep 2010, 12:13

Hi,

Im new to the forums and would like some assistance. I have been collecting SS pictures and have come across one that I would like some assistance in identifying someone and then tips on authenticity of prints.

The photo listed I have recently purchased from Ebay. I can clearly make out the Wiking cuff and from looking around the net conclude that the officer is a Gruppenfuhrer and quite possibly has the Knights Cross with Oakleaves and Swords.... now the only person I have been able to find and think was him is Herbert Otto Gille who commanded IV SS Panzer Corp which comprised of Totenkopf and Wiking. Does this guy look familiar to anyone else?

Also of note is that I wanted someone to provide feedback on the picture itself. I have a few SS photos and this photo seems "different" - its not a postcard type picture with anything on the back but the colour of the photo is brownish and the paper seems waxy/heavier than standard photos.

Anyone else who collects photos might be able to give me some thoughts on whether this is an authentic picture or some cheap copy....many thanks and Ill post some more pics soon if anyone is interested. Any information on what to look for in photos to identify rank, unit, location would certainly assist.

(Note I have had to crop the image as well due to the width)

Thanks

Sean

It's a very well known photo of Gille. I would say it's a cheap copy.

Gille it is!
Don't regonize the Sturmbannfürer nor the Obersturmführer.
