That's why I say he is a mystery. He was an Untersturmführer on 7.42 and yet, if that was the same man, he was still that rank by 4.45. Doesn't make sense, especially when he was in a combat unit.

Re: SS-Untersturmführer Heinrich Wickert
Hey guys!
Its quite simple really.
When the Americans came close to Dachau, the kommandant of the camp - Wilhelm Weiter - fled with most of the SS and many prisoners. Martin Weiss took over comand of the camp but he too, fled the camp only 2 days later with even more SS & prisoners. He in turn, turned over the comand to Johannes Otto who fled the same day with the last of the SS.
He turned over the comand of the camp to Heinrich Wicker the day before liberation. When the Americans came the next day, all SS in the camp were Waffen-SS soldiers who had been moved there from the front so that the real guards could flee. The only duty he had during his 24 hours as Kommandant was to wait for the Americans and surrender the camp.

Re: SS-Untersturmführer Heinrich Wickert
What front? Which Waffen-SS division? Wickert and his men were not frontline soldiers. Heinrich Wicker was an SS-Totenkopf Standarte 1 officer who served at Natzweiler-Struthof, Cochem, Mannheim-Sandhofen and Dachau. He arrived in KZ Dachau as commander of "Kampfgruppe Süd", a unit that guarded the evacuation of slave laborers from Aussenkommando Neckarelz to Dachau. The "Kampfgruppe" was a scratch unit formed from KZ guards who formerly served at subcamps Neckarelz, Kochendorf and Hessental. Obviously "evacuation of slave laborers" means preventing liberation by the allied forces.von Putzbrunn wrote:He turned over the comand of the camp to Heinrich Wicker the day before liberation. Re: SS-Untersturmführer Heinrich Wicker
The correct last name is Wicker -- Heinrich Wicker. The name "Wickert" was a recording error on one of the early reports by the Americans who liberated Dachau.
