Nationality of Desiderius Hampel

Can anyone help me with the nationality of Desiderius Hampel? Born in Croatia, parents names sound German, living most of his grown life in Hungary, until joining the Waffen-SS in 1942, speaking German, Croatian and Hungarian - so what was he; Volksdeutscher, Austrian, Croatian or Hungarian?

He fought in WW1 as a Leutnant of the Austro-Hungarian Army, in a Hungarian Regiment and after the war he worked in Germany but join the Hungarian Army in 1937. Thus he was Austrian/Hungarian and later Hungarian citizen.

Thank you, but would he have been considered German since he was SS-Brigadeführer (not Waffen-Brigadeführer)?

All of those ethnic Germans who entered the Waffen SS were given German Citizenship.

His Nationality is/was mixed Croatian,German,Austrian-Hungarian .He was my Great Uncle.Hampel line originated in the Sudetenland.
