New Eichmann Book

#1

Post by J. Duncan » 18 Aug 2014, 02:28

Forthcoming book on Eichmann's post-war life in Argentina using his 1300 page "memoirs" and the Stassen tapes titled
"Eichmann Before Jerusalem" (by Bettina Stangneth, Knopf, 608 pages). Book will attempt to show that Eichmann's self-image was more than an over worked "banal" cog (the impression he gave during his trial in Jerusalem - the image which influenced Hannah Arendt to write of the "banality of evil"). In his exile years, Eichmann was quite proud of his SS career and the power he wielded during his wartime activities. Enough to boast about it all in his notes and with Stassen. His life in exile must have been quite a downturn for him - like taking the CEO of a major business and turning him into a greeter at Walmart. He went from wearing a flashy uniform, having a nice house, being driven around by a chauffeur, and having the power of life or death for thousands of people to living in a concrete bungalow on Garibaldi street and riding the bus everyday to a mundane job in the suburbs. Quite a downgrade.

Sounds interesting, JD! Available on Kindle as well which is a bonus - shall have to check it out. As you say, his post-war life, and living it for the length of time that he did, must have been quite humiliating and frustrating for him.

Cheers,
Adam.
